VSO’s programme in Indonesia opened in 1968, working in health, education, secure livelihoods, disability and more recently climate adaptation and active citizenship. Since then, VSO has brought more than 1,000 professionals to Indonesia to work as volunteers.

In 2011, VSO reviewed the best way to allocate our resources to make the greatest possible difference to global poverty. We decided we would begin to close programmes if the country we were operating in was:

  • not least developed

  • had relatively smaller numbers of people in poverty

  • had less regional or global influence

VSO’s Indonesia country office closed in March 2014.
