Your journey with VSO

Step 1: Assessing your suitability

If your application is shortlisted, we'll invite you to participate in selection activities. These may take the form of an interview or other assessment activities, depending on the role for which you've applied.

Step 2: Placing you

If we're able to place you in the role you applied for, we’ll start the process of helping you to prepare for your placement. If you successfully complete the selection process, but we offer the placement to a different candidate, we’ll let you know about similar roles you can apply for. If you're shortlisted for another role, you would not need to repeat any assessment processes already completed.

Step 3: Logistical preparations

Our online system, the Volunteer Community, uses the latest technology to lead you through the process of getting ready for your placement. We'll help arrange flights and visas, your overseas accommodation and your insurance. You'll receive clear instructions to guide you every step of the way.

Step 4: Training and fundraising

As well as face-to-face training, VSO has an intranet site dedicated to helping you prepare for your placement. You'll also be given advice about fundraising for VSO before your placement. Find out more about the support you'll receive from VSO.

Step 5: In-country placement

When you first arrive on your placement, you'll have an in-country induction which will last between two weeks and three months, depending on the country. As well as helping you understand the locally important issues, the induction also allows you to bond with other volunteers. You will agree your placement goals together with your local VSO programme manager and the local employer.

Step 6: Returning home

You'll be invited to a debrief and evaluation session that will give you the opportunity to reflect on your placement. We'll also provide you with careers advice and other support to help you settle back home.
